What is a social security number?

Maeen Updated by Maeen

Sozialversicherungsnummer" is the name of the social security number in Germany. It is a 12-digit identification number that is given to each person at birth or when they first sign up for health insurance.

Your insurance provider needs this number for administrative purposes, and so will any employer if you decide to work alongside your studies.
