What is the difference between public and private health insurance in Germany?

Het Parekh Updated by Het Parekh

There are many differences between public and private health insurance in Germany.

 Some of them are;

  1. Private health insurance offers coverage above the statutory regulations
  2. Private health insurance can deny you based on your past medical record or any chronic diseases or conditions you may have.
  3. Unlike public insurance holders, you pay upfront for any doctor’s visits or medication and then submit a reimbursement claim with your insurance provider
  4. The cost of your private insurance can increase the older you become but on the flip side, if you are young and healthy, your premium can be lower than if you were insured publicly.
